Enhance your room with light
Light is a key influence on our moods. If it's a sunny day, our spirits are lifted. If it is overcast, we often feel less cheerful. In the same way, the lighting in your home can affect your mood.

Good lighting can help create and maintain a feel-good factor in your home, enabling you to change the mood to suit any occasion.

There are so many options to choose from. Do you want a natural daylight effect or do you need practical lighting for cooking, reading or studying ?

Perhaps you would like to accent a favourite feature in your home or garden.

Planning Your Lighting
Here are some questions to consider when planning the lighting in a room:
  • What are the main activities that take place in this room ?
  • What kinds of lighting will these activities require ?
  • How will the lighting needs vary during the day ?
  • What kind of atmosphere would you like to create ?
  • Which features in your room do you most like to highlight ?
  • How can you complement the amount of natural light that comes into the room ?
  • Are there any dark corners you want to illuminate ?
Some Useful Hints
  • Balance cold and warm light in each room. Use bright white halogen light for a clean, modern look and Softtone bulbs for a warm atmospheric look.
  • Position lighting at different heights to add interest and depth
  • Try overlapping pools of light with shadow to enhance the feeling of space in a room
  • Use several sources of lighting in each room so you can adapt your lighting for different activities and times of day
Types of Bulb
As there are so many bulbs available it is difficult to ascertain what you require. This may help you understand this a little more fully.
Guide to Bulb Caps
Different fittings require different 'caps'. There are four different 'caps' available, i.e. small Eddison screw (SES); small bayonet cap (SBC); Eddison screw (ES) and finally the more common bayonet cap(BC).
Spot Light Bulbs
These come in different sizes - R39, R50, R63, R80 etc.
Spotlights are useful for task lighting and they are ideal over mirrors and in the kitchen to cast bright light on work surfaces. Spotlight bulbs can also come in bright colours to create a party atmosphere.
Halogen
Again, these come in different sizes - capsules, 35mm, 50mm, closed and open, tube GU10, GZ10 etc. Halogen lighting produces a clear, bright, natural light that is perfect for hobbies, studying or cooking. It is also good for background illumination. This type of lighting is often used for security lighting because it is bright.
Standard Bulbs
The classic tungsten light bulb is what we are all most familiar with. This bulb comes in different shapes, i.e. GLS, candle, golf ball etc. Different finishes, i.e. clear or pearl, will create the atmosphere you require. You can also buy the classic light bulb in bright colours to create a party atmosphere.
